« Surf's up dude!

No, it's not a post on Bruce Willis' classic movie quote from The Last Boy Scout: "You can't just walk up to a guy and hit him, you gotta say something cool like surf's up, dude! and hit him with a surf board." Willis-style surfing aside, I was fortunate enough to spend three days in Tofino on Vancouver Island off the West Coast of Canada seeing and capturing surfing Tofino style.

Other than the surfing pictures, Tofino offered a great variety of photographic opportunities.

What a fantastic light the sun and mist produced. Impossible to emulate and is to be enjoyed while it lasts. The misty surf shots are unique and was more a result of being ready (i.e. having the camera out, on and ready to fire) than patience and planning. We were walking along the beach and suddenly this group of surfers, on their way up from the water, appeared in the fog. Click, click, click -- and the results are as you see above. The macro shots were almost every where you looked on the beach. Of course all the fog and rain also presented some great droplet shots. All were grabbed with my 105mm f2.8 macro with built-in vibration reduction so I was able to shoot hand-held.

Tofino truly is a great place for photography.

For the technically interested: Nikon D300 with Nikkor 17-55mm f2.8 (mainly used for the surf shots) and the Nikkor 105mm f2.8 VR Micro (primarily used for the beach and droplet close-up shots). Available light only, and what a magnificent light it was.
